Highway Honours Nova Scotia Fishing Industry

Transportation and Infrastructure Renewal (Oct. 2007 - Feb. 2021)

The province is paying tribute to Nova Scotians who have lost their lives in the fishing industry by designating Highway 103 as the Fishermen's Memorial Highway.

Fisheries and Aquaculture Minister Sterling Belliveau, on behalf of Transportation and Infrastructure Renewal Minister Maurice Smith, made the announcement today, June 12, before he unveiled a new commemorative highway sign in Shelburne.

"Fishing is one of the prime reasons for Nova Scotia's existence, but it is a risky and uncertain business," said Mr. Belliveau. "By giving Highway 103 this designation, we are acknowledging our debt to the hundreds who have lost their lives and offering our hope that we will lose no more."

"Designating Highway 103 is a great way to honour the lost fisherman of the South Shore," said Roy O'Donnell, deputy mayor of Shelburne. "This is something that is close to hearts of the people of our community."

Highway 103 runs from Halifax to Yarmouth and links a number of fishing communities.
