New Glasgow Academy Construction Officially Begins

Education and Early Childhood Development

Families in the New Glasgow area are another step closer to an exciting new P-8 school that will benefit students and the community for years to come.

Justice Minister Ross Landry, on behalf of Education and Early Childhood Development Minister Ramona Jennex, and New Glasgow Mayor Barrie MacMillan, were joined by students and representatives from Chignecto-Central Regional School Board at a sod-turning ceremony to officially begin construction of New Glasgow Academy today, June 24.

"Schools are the heart of a community. They are places to learn, grow and establish relationships," said Mr. Landry. "We're putting kids and learning first as we build and renovate schools in communities across the province. New Glasgow Academy will be well-equipped and offer more to students, which will lead to bright futures."

The new 47,700 square-foot school is designed to support student learning for the 21st century. The concept is meant to help students develop vital skills, including innovation, information, career, media, technology and life skills. The school will have a mix of traditional classrooms and 'break-out' spaces for students to work on projects collaboratively.

"Strong educational assets are critical to the strength , vitality and continued growth of a community," said Mayor MacMillan. "We are looking forward to our students and teachers having a quality facility that will provide the setting required to deliver and experience an outstanding P-8 education.

"This has been one of our town's top priorities and we are pleased to partner with the province in assuring this important educational facility is a reality for the citizens of New Glasgow."

The province contributed $18 million for the school. The project is expected to be completed in 2014.
