Improving Public Transit for Nova Scotians

Service Nova Scotia and Municipal Relations (Oct. 2000 - March 2014)

NOTE: A list of projects follows this release.

More Nova Scotians will soon have an easier time getting around their communities, thanks to provincial support for public transit.

Through the Nova Scotia Transit Research Incentive Program, the province is investing more than $237,000 in feasibility studies, business plans and door-to-door services for transit in rural and unserviced urban areas.

"We know many Nova Scotians need access to transportation to get to work, school, medical appointments, or to visit family and friends," said Transportation and Infrastructure Renewal Minister Maurice Smith, on behalf of John MacDonell, Minister of Service Nova Scotia and Municipal Relations. "Having public transit is important to communities throughout the province.

"This funding will allow 11 community organizations and municipalities to conduct feasibility studies, develop business plans and expand transit systems in their communities."

The program provides up to 100 per cent of eligible costs to a maximum grant of $50,000 for approved projects.

"Our organization is pleased with the funding we are receiving from the province, which will help us move forward with our transit plan and put it into action," said Jerome Grant, chair, Antigonish Community Transit. "I want to thank the Nova Scotia government for their support for transit in the Antigonish area."
