Atlantic 4-H Members Learn From Experts at Livestock Showcase

Agriculture

Atlantic 4-H members will learn the finer points of livestock showmanship and herd management from agricultural experts at the 24th EastGen Showcase.

The showcase, geared to Atlantic 4-H beef and dairy members between the ages of 13 to 21, will be held July 12 to 14 at the Nova Scotia Provincial Exhibition Grounds in Bible Hill.

Experts from the animal production company EastGen, and agricultural leadership co-ordinators with the Department of Agriculture, will teach the latest techniques in show preparation, calf health, livestock judging, showmanship, clipping, display design and herd management.

"This event gives 4-H members the opportunity to learn technical livestock management skills from industry specialists," said Agriculture Minister John MacDonell. "Nova Scotia has a reputation for producing high quality dairy and beef cattle, and by training youth, who are our future agricultural leaders, we are helping to ensure that tradition continues."

"The EastGen 4-H Showcase is a highly anticipated annual event," said EastGen regional sales manager, Dale MacPhee. "The weekend is about mentoring future agricultural leaders and providing them with an opportunity to really embrace the 4-H motto of 'learn to do by doing'."

At the end of the two-day event, 4-H members will show their calves at a beef and dairy show. Awards will be presented to champion showmen and calves, and those who excel in session work. During the show, participants are eligible for a jackpot draw of high-quality bovine embryos donated by Atlantic area producers.

The livestock show will take place Sunday, July 14, at 9:30 and is open to the public.
