Province's protected areas plan shows leadership, Op-ed

Environment (April 2008 - Feb. 2021)

NOTE: The following is an op-ed piece from Environment Minister Sterling Belliveau.

Nova Scotia's plan to protect at least 12 per cent of its land by 2015 is garnering national attention, reaffirming our province's leadership in land conservation.

In a news release issued July 15, the Canadian Parks and Wilderness Society said Nova Scotia "… stands out as one of the few examples across the country where an ambitious plan to create new protected areas is turning into real conservation outcomes on the ground."

Nova Scotia's land protection commitment has preserved some truly special and ecologically important parts of our province, including habitats for rare plants and species at risk, and several hundred kilometres of coastline.

I would like to thank the Canadian Parks and Wilderness Society for its recognition of our efforts, and I look forward to releasing the final protected areas plan in the very near future.
