Picnic in the Past on Georges Island Fast Approaching

Only three days until picnic-goers can set sail for George's Island to explore and enjoy fresh local fare.

The first annual Picnic in the Past will be held on Saturday, July 20 and Sunday, July 21. This family-friendly picnic is being sponsored by Select Nova Scotia, the province's successful Buy Local marketing campaign, and organized by Sports and Entertainment Atlantic.

"This is a great opportunity for people to visit George's Island and support our farmers and local economy," said Agriculture Minister John MacDonell. "There will be some wonderful local food available on the island."

Select Nova Scotia picnic lunches are available to be pre-ordered for $10 and $5 for children.

Pre-ordered lunches include a choice of sandwich made from local meats, cheese and vegetables, vegetable crudités, salad and a fresh baked cookie. There will also be hamburgers, sausages and Jimmie Dog hot dogs available for purchase on the island.

"This weekend combines the past with present day products. Be sure to ask your server whose product you are enjoying," said Margie Lamb, co-owner of Meadowbrook Meat Market, home of the Jimmie Dog. "By supporting this picnic and others throughout the summer you are supporting the producers, farmers, their employees and other Nova Scotians whose income is dependent on eating locally delicious foods."

Georges Island will be open to explore each day from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Transportation will run during those times from the wharf in front of the Bicycle Thief restaurant at Bishop's Landing. Transportation is provided by Waterfront Development Corporation and included in the ticket price.
