Cape Breton Small Business Becoming More Competitive

Economic and Rural Development and Tourism (Jan. 2011 - April 2015)

The province is helping a family-owned small business become more competitive and capitalize on new opportunities.

North Sydney seafood supplier Gillis Seafood Ltd. has obtained food safety certification required to sell to large grocery chains, thanks to support from the province's Business Development Program.

"Small businesses are a vital part of communities across Nova Scotia, and the province is committed to helping companies like Gillis Seafood grow and succeed," said Economic and Rural Development and Tourism Minister Graham Steele during a tour of the facility today, July 22. "We want businesses to be innovative and competitive so they can successfully meet the challenges of an ever-changing marketplace and make the most of new opportunities."

Gillis Seafood employs nine Nova Scotians and supplies lobster, salmon, mussels, oysters and other fresh fish to hundreds of restaurants, retail outlets and other food services throughout Eastern Canada. The company is now exploring the potential of selling to other Canadian markets.

"My father started this business in the 1940s, and his hard work and values still drive our success today," said company president Jim Gillis. "It's important to us to see the province recognize our contribution to our local community and economy. Their support is helping us stay on top of our game and take advantage of new markets."

The province provided $16,820 for two projects to help Gillis Seafood successfully achieve Global Food Safety Initiative certification and to pursue Marine Stewardship Council Standards certification, helping the company stay competitive, current, and sustainable.

The Business Development Program helps small businesses expand. It offers eligible businesses support for activities that increase productivity, improve competitiveness, explore product innovation, and increase international commerce opportunities.

The province is helping small businesses find the support they need more quickly and easily with a new toll-free number (1-855-324-4668), through business.novascotia.ca, and by bundling programs and services into five clear entry points.
