Recycling Fees to Stay the Same

Environment (April 2008 - Feb. 2021)

The province is not increasing deposit fees for glass recyclables, as was suggested in a news release today, Aug. 1, from the Canadian Taxpayers Federation.

"Neither myself nor my government colleagues have ever discussed increasing this tax," Environment Minister Sterling Belliveau said. "Departmental staff generated a discussion paper to collect feedback from interested stakeholders on solid waste management regulations. This is regular practice in all government departments.

"The existing program has been very successful in encouraging Nova Scotians to recycle their beverage containers and the province is not making any changes to deposit fees."

The province will continue to focus efforts on finding ways to divert even more materials, such as construction and demolition debris, from landfills. For more information on beverage containers and other diversion programs, visit www.gov.ns.ca/nse/waste/programs.asp .
