NOTE: A list of projects follows this release.

Fire departments and emergency responders in the Annapolis Valley area will be able to purchase equipment to help them better protect communities with provincial support announced today, Aug. 15.

Through the Emergency Services Provider Fund, the province is investing more than $96,000 in nine organizations in Yarmouth, Digby, Annapolis, and Hants counties.

"Funds provided through this program help fire departments and first responders purchase equipment to help them carry out their duties safely and effectively," said John MacDonell, Minister of Service Nova Scotia and Municipal Relations. "We are committed to making our communities safe, healthy places for Nova Scotians."

The funds will be used to purchase essential equipment used in the response to a fire or an emergency. This includes personal protective equipment, self-contained breathing apparatus, communication equipment, and hoses and pumps.

"The Emergency Services Providers Fund has provided the necessary funds for vehicle rescue equipment, enabling our department to provide emergency rescue services to those in need," says Todd Swinamer, fire chief, Uniacke and District Volunteer Fire Department.

The program provides up to 50 per cent of eligible costs for approved projects, to a maximum contribution of $20,000. In total, the program is providing about $500,000 to 55 organizations.
