Public Invited to Share Ideas on Cunard Site Open Space

Waterfront Development Corp. is inviting the public to help shape the open space of the Cunard development site on the Halifax waterfont.

The site, currently a parking lot between Bishop's Landing and the Nova Scotia Power building, will soon be developed into exciting mixed-use architecture and public space.

"The public open space is for everyone to enjoy and experience," said Colin MacLean, president and CEO, Waterfront Development. "We want to know how people see themselves using this space at the Cunard site and how it can add to the string of assets along the Halifax waterfront."

In August, Waterfront Development and Southwest Properties/Minett Real Estate Services announced finalized legal agreements that open the door for the development, that includes 250 residential units, new commercial retail businesses and significant public space along the boardwalk.

"The potential for the Cunard site to be a major architectural and open space anchor for the southern waterfront is enormous," said Andy Fillmore, vice-president of planning and development, Waterfront Development. "With residential development flourishing in this area, the need to engage the community in the design of these public spaces is more important than ever."

The public can see initial ideas and share thoughts on Saturday, Oct. 19 and Wednesday, Oct. 23. The site will be illuminated during Nocturne Halifax: Art at Night on Saturday.

On Oct. 23, an input session will be held at Nova Scotia Power, Atrium (Boardwalk Level), 1223 Lower Water St.

This event starts at 6 p.m., with an open house until 7 p.m. A presentation and collaborative design workshop will run from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m., and a meet and mingle from 8:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. Children are welcome.

Waterfront Development staff, IBI Group landscape architects and consultants from Myrgan Inc. will attend.

The development is expected to start in late 2014, with a targeted completion in 2016. It will be the largest development project to date for Waterfront Development, and will bring more people to live and work downtown.

Southwest Properties will operate the facility for 99 years under the terms of lease. Waterfront Development will continue to manage and operate the outdoor space.
