Kingston In Final Vote For Competition

It’s now down to two, and Health and Wellness Minister Leo Glavine is encouraging Nova Scotians to vote often in the Kraft Hockeyville competition.

Kingston, Nova Scotia, is facing off against Sylvan Lake, Alberta, for the top spot in the competition, which includes a Hockey Night in Canada broadcast in the community, and an NHL pre-season game hosted at the local arena. If Kingston wins, NHL star Nathan MacKinnon will visit the community. Both Kingston and Sylvan Lake will receive $100,000 in upgrades to their local rink with cash prizes to runner-up rinks.

People 13 and older can vote as many times as they want at krafthockeyville.cbc.ca before the deadline of 11:59 p.m. Eastern Time, Monday, March 24.

"Arenas are such a critical part of the sport and recreation life of so many of our communities," said Mr. Glavine. "They provide important year-round health and wellness opportunities. I know as a province we can make Kingston a winner and all feel part of another accomplishment on the national stage."

Kingston’s rink – the Credit Union Centre - lost its ice due to mechanical issues less than 48 hrs after the 2012/13 season began, said Mr. Glavine. While the rink is now operational, it still needs a permanent concrete floor so it can be used in the summer.

Mr. Glavine recognized the hard work of all local communities in Nova Scotia and around Canada who entered the competition, and he thanked local organizers including Wayne Fowler for their work.

"I was pleased to hear from my eight year old granddaughter today that her family is voting and supporting a facility that will be part of her future and the next generation of Annapolis Valley residents," said Mr. Glavine.
