Death in Custody at Central Nova Scotia Correctional Facility

A man found unresponsive in his cell at Central Nova Scotia Correctional Facility today, April 7, has died.

The man was found unconscious and unresponsive shortly after 8 a.m. Staff contacted emergency health services and immediately began medical treatment. The man was pronounced dead at 8:59 a.m.

"My heart goes out to the friends and family on the loss of their loved one," said Justice Minister Lena Diab. "Any loss of life is tragic, and department staff will be investigating."

The man's next of kin have been notified. Halifax Regional Police are investigating the death. The body has been turned over to the medical examiner to determine the cause of death. The Justice Department will also conduct an internal investigation.
