Government to Strengthen Supports for African Nova Scotia Students

In an effort to strengthen supports for African Nova Scotian students, government will conduct an internal review of key organizations that provide supports for students across the province.

The review will look at mandates, roles, responsibilities and governance of organizations to ensure there is no duplication of roles and to maximize efforts to support African Nova Scotian students.

"This review gives us an opportunity to get a better idea of what services and supports exist today, and what areas we need to improve or change to better serve the needs of African Nova Scotian students," said Karen Casey, Minister of Education and Early Childhood Development. "The organizations do important work and provide invaluable help to students, and I look forward to working with them to enhance and strengthen those services."

The review will include some of the province's key partners in supporting African Nova Scotian students, such as the Council on African Canadian Education, the Delmore "Buddy" Daye Africentric Learning Institute, the Black Educators Association, and the African Canadian Services Division of the Department of Education and Early Childhood Development.

The six-week review will examine reports, legislation, contracts and department recommendations to support African Nova Scotian learners and develop a plan that clearly identifies roles, responsibilities and expectations for each of the organizations.
