Nova Scotians are invited to celebrate local days at Sobeys stores this summer.

Select Nova Scotia and Sobeys are teaming up to celebrate and support local food and farmers with events at nine stores throughout the summer. The Sobeys locations will host events on three weekends.

"Recent research has shown us finding and identifying the local products in the grocery store is not always easy," said Agriculture Minister Keith Colwell. "We are pleased that Sobeys is partnering with us to showcase the variety and quality of Nova Scotia products that are available, and ensure consumers are able to identify the food that is grown locally."

The first weekend of events will be held at the following Sobeys locations:

  • Sydney, 272 Prince St., Friday, July 11, 3–8 p.m. and Saturday, July 12, 1-6 p.m.
  • Truro, 68 Robie St., Fundy Trail Centre, Friday, July 11, 1-8 p.m., Saturday, July 12, 1 – 6 p.m. and Sunday, July 13, noon-5 p.m.
  • New Glasgow, 610 East River Rd., Aberdeen Shopping Centre, Thursday, July 10 to Saturday, July 12, noon–5 p.m.

"Sobeys started more than 107 years ago right here in Nova Scotia and our business was built on local relationships. We're proud to continue that tradition and showcase our support of local growers and producers through these events," said Peter Doucette, general manager for Sobeys in Atlantic Canada.

"We carry thousands of products from hundreds of Atlantic suppliers, and entering peak local growing season is the perfect time to hold these events celebrating our producers."

Many local products will be showcased at the events, but the main feature will be strawberries. Farmers will be at pop-up produce stands within the Sobeys stores. People will be able to taste and learn where the food came from and how it is grown. Sobeys chefs and staff will also prepare samples.

Other local days events are planned for Aug. 15–17 at stores in Halifax, Dartmouth and Fall River, and Sept. 12-14 at stores in New Minas, Bridgewater and Greenwood. More information is available at www.selectnovascotia.ca .
