Victoria County Preparing for Improved Cellular Coverage

Economic and Rural Development and Tourism (Jan. 2011 - April 2015)

Residents in more rural areas of Cape Breton's Victoria County will soon have access to improved cellular coverage and Internet services through new mobile network technology.

MLA Pam Eyking, on behalf of Economic and Rural Development and Tourism Minister Michel Samson, announced today, July 16, that government is prepared to support the municipality's plan to eliminate a long-standing issue with cellular gaps in Cape North and Middle River.

"Access to leading technology will allow our rural area businesses to grow and compete," said Ms. Eyking.

"Parts of this area have long-waited for the opportunity to have the reliable cellular infrastructure that is critical for economic growth and fostering innovation, and providing everyday services to our residents that many people take for granted. I'm looking forward to seeing this project move ahead."

The municipality is in discussions with a private sector service provider to install two new towers and upgrade existing tower infrastructure to provide expanded access to cellular service and cellular-based broadband Internet service.

"We have been lobbying for this technology for several years to help support and enhance business opportunities, promote economic development and improve the delivery of emergency services to our residents," said Municipality of Victoria County Warden Bruce Morrison.

"The province has recognized our need and their support is necessary to put this infrastructure in place."

The municipality and the provincial government are each contributing a maximum of $250,000. The province's money will not flow until a final contract is reached.
