Development Opportunity on Lunenburg's Working Waterfront
Waterfront Development Corporation is inviting proposals from development and business interests to partner on construction of a new facility on the former Scotia Trawler storeroom site.
The agreement would also include a long-term lease for the property and wharf.
The request for proposals is open until Nov. 28.
"Lunenburg is one of Canada's most historic and recognized fishing ports and commercial harbours," said MLA Suzanne Lohnes-Croft, on behalf of Economic and Rural Development and Tourism Minister Michel Samson. "This is an opportunity to work together to attract new business and economic activity to a key Nova Scotia location."
Located at 250 Montague St., the site is situated on the working waterfront in the heart of the UNESCO designated World Heritage site. As a result of fire in the summer of 2013, the building previously located on the site has been removed and the area is ready for new construction.
"There is growing momentum on the waterfront and in the community," said Colin MacLean, president and CEO, Waterfront Development Corp. "Since 2005, we have invested over $2 million in the Lunenburg waterfront and important projects are on the horizon. This partnership opportunity will create new economic activity at this strategic site while preserving the heritage character of the Old Town."
Gerry Rolfsen, chair of the Lunenburg Waterfront Association, said the working waterfront is critical to the economic prosperity and identity of the town.
"With our partners at Waterfront Development, we are seeing great progress toward achieving this vision," said Mr. Rolfsen. "This site is a key property for the successful future of the working waterfront and we are optimistic we will find a partner who will be able to develop it to its full potential."
The site is approximately 27,000 square feet (2,508 square metres) and is centrally located on Nova Scotia's South Shore.
Lunenburg is surrounded by a diverse cross-section of industries, including companies involved in aerospace and defence, manufacturing, agriculture, ocean technology, value-added food products, and energy. It is also home to several internationally-traded companies, including ABCO Industries, Clearwater Seafoods Limited, and HB Studios.
Lunenburg is a seaside town among the most visited tourism destinations in Nova Scotia. Historic architecture, an active culinary scene, more than 180 shops and services, fine art, golf courses, festivals, and the Fisheries Museum of the Atlantic make it an attractive location for businesses, visitors and residents.
