Province Celebrates Duke Awareness Week

Education and Early Childhood Development

Young Nova Scotians who are volunteering and involved in their communities are being celebrated today, Oct. 20, during Duke Awareness Week.

The week, part of the Duke of Edinburgh's Award program, runs until Friday, Oct. 25, and has young people, program participants, leaders, board members, parents and volunteers taking part in theme days such as Thank You Thursday and Service Saturday. The events highlight great work youth are doing in their communities.

"For the past 42 years, the Duke of Edinburgh's Award program has had a positive impact on the lives of Nova Scotians," said Education and Early Childhood Development Minister Karen Casey. "Through the program, every year, young Nova Scotians volunteer their time and efforts to improve our province and for that I want to recognize their efforts and thank them."

More than 4,100 young Nova Scotians, age 14 to 25, participate in Duke of Edinburgh Award programs each year. The program promotes community and national development, while participants learn the life skills that lead to personal growth and achievement.
