Funding Supports Blue Route Project Consultation

Government will provide $20,000 to Bicycle Nova Scotia to raise awareness about the Blue Route project and gather community input.

Energy Minister Andrew Younger announced the funding today, Nov. 3.

"Supporting a greater discussion and partnership on a possible provincewide cycling network is important," said Mr. Younger. "I encourage Nova Scotians to learn about, and discuss, the kinds of sustainable transportation, healthy living and economic development opportunities that could come our way."

Bicycle Nova Scotia envisions a provincewide, 3,000-kilometre cycling network, the Blue Route, that would connect Nova Scotia communities through local networks and routes on secondary highways and multi-purpose trails.

Bicycle Nova Scotia will lead consultations with interested groups over the next two months. Public consultation dates will be announced in the new year.

Bicycle Nova Scotia will present an updated Blue Route network concept and project brand at the Union of Nova Scotia Municipalities fall conference from Tuesday to Friday in Halifax.

"Cycling networks are the key to encouraging new people to bicycle in Nova Scotia, whether as part of vacation plans, a daily commute, or outdoor recreation," said Ben Buckwold, director, Bikeways and Blue Route Implementation. "There is a lot of excitement about what this can mean for the competitiveness of our province and quality of life for residents, and we are grateful for this opportunity to discuss the future potential of the Blue Route with communities around Nova Scotia."

Government is collaborating with Bicycle Nova Scotia to ensure infrastructure and road safety are considered and include the province's Sustainable Transportation Strategy and Thrive! A Plan for a Healthier Nova Scotia.
