SERVICE NOVA SCOTIA--New Accessible Motorcycle Licence Plate Available

  • ---------------------------------------------------------------Nova Scotians with disabilities can now get an accessible licence plate for their motorcycles, instead of a placard.

Service Nova Scotia Minister Mark Furey unveiled the new licence plate at an event, today, Nov. 24.

"Over the past couple years, we've heard from a number of Nova Scotians that there is no secure way to display a placard on their motorcycle without the risk of personal information theft," said Mr. Furey. "We want Nova Scotians with disabilities to be able to drive their motorcycles without worrying about losing their placard, or their personal information being stolen."

Nova Scotia had two types of accessible parking indicators, a permanent plate for passenger vehicles and a placard to display from a rearview mirror.

Nova Scotia is the first province in Canada to offer accessible motorcycle licence plates.

Tanya MacBean, a Nova Scotian motorcyclist, received the first accessible licence plate at today's event.

"After sustaining a mobility-restricting injury from a motorcycle accident in 2012, I requested a more permanent handicap parking pass alternative to the placards hung off the rearview mirrors in cars," said Ms. MacBean. "My sincerest thank you on behalf of myself and my fellow brothers and sisters of the wind for implementing this positive change. I am very happy that my proposal has become a reality."
