Nova Scotian Businesses Train to Win Bigger Deals

Nova Scotian businesses now have access to the training they need to take advantage of major projects.

Businesses can participate in a customized workplace education program where they will build skills and knowledge needed to land contracts in major projects, such as shipbuilding, the Maritime Link and offshore oil exploration.

The pilot program has already helped participants take their businesses to the next level.

"I'm currently three classes into the course. I'm very excited to get into the request for proposal modules, which we're going into next week," said Emily Smits, Modest Tree Media Inc. "So far, in every class, I've been able to take away something very relevant that I can implement in our business in the very short term.

"I'm so glad that this course was sent our way and we are very appreciative of the support."

Topics include pricing for profit, budgeting and financial management. Businesses will also have sales and negotiation training and learn how to effectively respond to requests for proposals to bid on, and win, jobs.

The program is a partnership between government and the Excellence in Manufacturing Consortium and delivered through the Workplace Education Initiative. The initiative provides essential skills training to help with building a skilled and adaptable workforce.

Labour and Advanced Education Minister Kelly Regan attended a session today, Dec. 15, at the NSCC Leeds Street Campus.

"We have a number of major projects about to get underway, and we want our local companies to have a good shot at winning those contracts," said Ms. Regan. "Our small- and medium-sized businesses play an integral role in our economy. This program is just one of the ways we're helping them to succeed."
