Shubenacadie Lectures Examine Wildlife Topics

A series of free monthly lectures on topics ranging from community forests to creatures of the ocean will be offered at Shubenacadie Provincial Wildlife Park this year.

"This lecture series provides a great opportunity for Nova Scotians to learn more about the wonders of nature and how our environment impacts our lives," said Zach Churchill, Minister of Natural Resources. "I encourage everyone to check out these lectures and attend the free sessions."

The talks will be delivered in the Ducks Unlimited Greenwing Legacy Interpretive Centre at the park on the third Saturday of each month.

Dates, presenters, topics and times are:

  • Jan. 17, (Snow date: Sunday, Jan. 18) Matt Miller of the Ecology Action Centre speaks about community forestry in Nova Scotia, 1 p.m. - 2:30 p.m.
  • Feb. 21, Paul Heath of the Royal Astronomical Society of Canada will talk about a few mysteries in our solar system and will conduct a night sky tour with a presentation from 5:30 p.m. - 6:15 p.m. and sky viewing from 6:15 p.m. - 7:30 p.m. The tour is dependent on the weather and participants are reminded to dress warmly.
  • March 21, Sean Brillant of the Canadian Wildlife Federation will talk about the thousands of wildlife creatures that exist in our oceans, 1 p.m. - 2:30 p.m.
  • April 18, Sherman Boates from the Department of Natural Resources will use signs of spring to explore the concept of biodiversity and explain many of the hidden and critical ways it benefits us, 1 p.m. - 2:30 p.m.

The provincial wildlife park is located on Highway 2 in Shubenacadie, about 40 minutes north of Halifax. From Highway 102, take Exit 11 to Stewiacke, and then follow Highway 2 south for about seven kilometres to the park entrance.
