Schools Receive Capital Repairs Funding for Improvements

Education and Early Childhood Development

NOTE: A list of schools receiving capital repairs funding follows this release.

Forty-three schools across the province are receiving upgrades, repairs, and improvements this year as part of capital repairs funding.

The projects represent an investment of more than $15 million.

"This year our schools have dealt with challenging weather conditions which makes these repairs very important," said Education and Early Childhood Development Minister Karen Casey. "These repairs will help to maintain a high-quality learning environment in our schools, which benefits all of our students, teachers and staff."

School boards have been notified of the schools that have been approved for repairs and are preparing to move forward with renovations.

This year, roof repairs are common due to snow buildup. J.L. Ilsley High School and Beechville Lakeside Timberlea Sr. Elementary School in Halifax, and Riverview High School in Coxheath, Cape Breton Regional Municipality, are an example of schools which will benefit.

Capital repairs projects also include window replacements, upgrades to a teen health centre and cafeteria, paving, boiler replacements and more.

All capital repairs projects must represent improvements to school infrastructure and must have a budget between $150,000 and $1 million in order to be eligible.
