Spend a Day in the Park

Nova Scotians can enjoy celebrations at many provincial parks on Saturday, July 18, to mark Canada's Parks Day.

"We hope people will take the day to enjoy nature and try some new outdoor activity," said Natural Resources Minister Zach Churchill. "We have 130 parks across Nova Scotia where people can spend time together."

Nova Scotians can enjoy family fun day events, scavenger hunts, sand castle competitions, nature walks and more at more than 13 provincial parks on Saturday.

Five Islands Provincial Park is celebrating 50 years of great adventure by inviting families from all generations to send in pictures from the past five decades to <fiveislandspark@novascotia.ca.> You can visit the park and look at the pictures to see how it has changed.

Celebrate the Friends of McNabs Island Society's 25th anniversary with a picnic from 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Participate in guided tours, beach walks, yoga, an outdoor boot camp, music and children's activities including a scanvenger hunt. Celtic musicians Dave MacIssac and Louis Benoit will be playing.

Other Parks Day events include:

  • kite making at Blomidon Provincial Park, Kings County at 9:30 a.m. At 1:30 p.m. meet Smokey the Bear and see how forest fire crews keep the park wildlife safe
  • Canoe Kayak Nova Scotia is offering an opportunity for the whole family to paddle canoes and receive some basic instruction from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Dollar Lake Provincial Park, Halifax Regional Municipality
  • a scavenger hunt will be held at Ellenwood Provincial Park Yarmouth County from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.
  • from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. put on your most colourful clothing and try to outshine the proud peacock at Shubenacadie Provincial Wildlife Park, Hants County
  • at noon enjoy a scavenger hunt, washer toss and barbecue at Valleyview Park, Annapolis County
  • try geocaching, from 10 a.m. to noon at Caribou-Munroes Island Provincial Park, Pictou County
