Celebrating Organic Week

Nova Scotians will have an opportunity to learn about the economic and health benefits of local organic products during National Organic Week, Sept. 19-27.

Agriculture Minister Keith Colwell launched the week in Nova Scotia during a tour of Boates Farm in Woodville, Kings Co., today, Sept. 17.

"Eating local and looking for organic products produced right here in Nova Scotia can contribute to a healthier lifestyle and vibrant rural communities," said Mr. Colwell. "I want to encourage Nova Scotians to learn about these benefits and the many farms and producers like Boates Farm that are helping to build the organic industry in our province."

Boates Farm is a family-run farm and a certified organic producer of apples, pears, sweet apple cider and vinegars that has operated since 1960. The farm offers a u-pick and sells its products weekly at the Historic Farmers Market.

Brian Boates now operates the farm started by his parents and was pleased to share their success story with Mr. Colwell.

"We have been part of a rural community for several decades," said Mr. Boates. "Growing local produce and supplying it to our fellow Nova Scotians has been very satisfying for us."

National Organic Week is an annual celebration of organic food, farming and products across the country. Events held during the week showcase the benefits of organic agriculture and its positive impact on the environment.

Events in Nova Scotia are being supported by the Atlantic Canada Organic Regional Network, which aims to educate the public and promote the growth of the organic industry in the region. The events help spread information on organic products, co-ordinate education for producers and consumers and provide networking opportunities for the industry.

"The organic sector is grateful for this public recognition of the positive contributions made by local organic producers to the province," said Theresa Richards, Atlantic Canada Organic Regional Network executive director. "We're also pleased to have the provincial government participate in our efforts to raise awareness about the availability of Nova Scotia organic products."
