Take a Hike for Open Forest Day

Natural Resources (to July 2018)

Learn about the wonders of the woods, the value of our forests, and the diversity of nature at Nova Scotia's first Open Forest Day on Saturday, Oct. 24, at Maskwa Aquatic Club in the Blue Mountain Birch Cove Lakes Wilderness Area.

The Department of Natural Resources and 30 organizations are joining to inform Nova Scotians on developing and maintaining woodlands, and the importance of natural resources in the province.

"The forests have so much to offer, whether you're looking to explore nature or economic opportunity, it is here in our backyard," said Justice Minister Diana Whalen, on behalf of acting Natural Resources Minister Zach Churchill.

The event will feature information booths and family-fun activities along a hiking trail in the Blue Mountain Birch Cove Lakes Wilderness Area. Presentations in the main building of the aquatic club will cover the role of forests in the environment, the economy, and our lives, basic woods safety, biodiversity in the garden and more.

"Biodiversity is the key to healthy woodlands just as it is to gardens, and I look forward to expanding on this at Open Forest Day," said Marjorie Willison, CBC Radio's gardening expert and author of East Coast Gardener.

The event is free and runs from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m. Activities for the day include guided hikes, face painting, All Nations Mi'kmaq Drummers, and a passport to nature game. Tea and coffee will be provided and lunch will be available for purchase.
