Province Sponsors Silver Economy Summit in Pictou County

Seniors (Oct. 2007 - Aug. 2021)

Businesses and organizations wanting to learn more about opportunities in Nova Scotia's seniors market should attend the Silver Economy Summit in Pictou County, March 8-9.

"We are excited to partner with the Province of Nova Scotia and to host this event in Pictou County," said Barrie MacMillan, mayor of New Glasgow and chair of the Pictou County Wellness Centre Building Authority. "As an entrepreneurial community and a great special event destination, Pictou County will be a great location to host the Silver Economy Summit and share information about this growing demographic."

Between now and 2030, the number of people over 65 in Nova Scotia will almost double, creating many opportunities for companies that provide goods and services for seniors.

"Seniors have a broad range of needs and interests, and we believe Nova Scotia can play a leadership role in serving this market," says Seniors Minister Leo Glavine. "Government is providing up to $90,000 to support this event and this community."

During the summit, innovative social entrepreneur Gerry Pond will deliver a keynote speech on the value of seniors to our economy.

Mr. Pond was the CEO of NBTel and president of its successor, Aliant Telecom. He was honoured with the Wolf Blass Lifetime Achievement Award in 2014, and has received honorary degrees from the University of New Brunswick and St. Mary's University, Halifax.

In November, the town of New Glasgow and Pictou County officially launched an age-friendly action plan for their region, a model to be copied across the province.
