Nova Scotia Businesses Partner with GE Canada

Two innovative Nova Scotia businesses are partnering with GE Canada to bring new technology products and services to market faster.

Nova Scotia formed a partnership with GE in 2014 to help entrepreneurs gain access to GE intellectual property. Halifax-based companies CarteNav Solutions and MOBIA Technology Innovations are the first two businesses to sign agreements under that partnership.

"Nova Scotia businesses have the talent and ideas to compete globally, and GE's work here is a strong endorsement of our abilities," said Premier Stephen McNeil. "Government will continue to make Nova Scotia stronger by building on these relationships and investing in innovation and infrastructure."

"There is talent in Nova Scotia's entrepreneurial sector, and a commitment from the provincial government to build winning conditions for business," said Bradley Smith, GE Canada vice president, Regional Programs. "GE has a unique opportunity, here in Nova Scotia, to invest its intellectual property and digital-industrial capabilities in the next great technology companies."

Nova Scotia is one of two Canadian provinces partnering with GE to help businesses access intellectual property.

"We are committed to working with businesses so we can build a stronger technology sector in Nova Scotia," said Business Minister Mark Furey. "Our agreement with GE Canada will continue to benefit Nova Scotian businesses and create more opportunities for young Nova Scotians."

CarteNav will use GE technology to enhance its mission system software for surveillance, law enforcement, search and rescue, disaster response, and resource protection.

Through Innovacorp, government will provide $250,000 to support the partnership. GE will provide technical resources and expertise, and CarteNav will contribute working capital.

"This is an exciting development for CarteNav and we look forward to working closely with GE Global Research to bring game-changing new capabilities to our global marketplace."

MOBIA is the first Canadian Independent Software Vendor accepted into the new General Electric Digital Alliance Program. The partnership between GE Digital and MOBIA will develop and put in place industrial Internet of Things solutions on GE Predix for global customers.

These applications connect sensors to real-time data processing and advanced analytics, allowing key insight into devices such as jet engines, wind turbines, smart electric grid meters, environmental sensors, and many other corporate assets.

Having access to the industry experts at GE, combined with our technical expertise, allows us to provide a unique service from all our locations across Canada."

Government and GE Canada will continue to look for opportunities for more Nova Scotia based small and medium-sized enterprises to license GE intellectual property and co-operate on new technology development.
