PREMIER'S OFFICE–-Nova Scotia Celebrates Cadet Day

Young people and volunteers from across the province visited Province House in Halifax, today, Oct. 1, to celebrate Cadet Day.

The Sea, Army, Air and Navy League Cadets Day Act recognizes the first Saturday in October as Cadet Day in Nova Scotia, held to honour the cadets, volunteers and supporters of the cadets program.

"As Her Majesty's representative in Nova Scotia, it is my honour to bring greetings and to recognize the achievements and hard work of all those involved with the cadet programs," said Lt.-Gov. J.J. Grant. "As a former army cadet I know very well the benefits of the cadet movement in Canada and I salute it as one of the finest youth programs in the country."

Nova Scotia has 86 cadet units with nearly 3,300 youth representing Sea, Army and Air Cadet Corps and Squadrons.

"The cadet program encourages and challenges youth to become active members of our communities," said Deputy Premier Diana Whalen on behalf of Premier Stephen McNeil, who is also Minister responsible for Military Relations. "It teaches valuable life and work skills such as teamwork, mutual respect, integrity, leadership and citizenship."

High school students who take part in cadets can also earn a credit on their transcript.

"Community support is vital to the success of cadet corps squadrons in any Canadian community," said Maj. Bob Eagle, deputy chief training officer for cadets in Atlantic Canada. "In partnership with our three civilian leagues, the Canadian Armed Forces continues to deliver the unique opportunities of Sea, Army and Air Cadets to you in Nova Scotia, free of charge."
