Government Invests in Clean Energy Project in Amherst

A community pilot project led by the Town of Amherst will explore the environmental and economic benefits of smart grid technology.

Cumberland North MLA Terry Farrell, on behalf of Energy Minister Michel Samson, announced $12,500 in provincial funding for the study today, March 27.

“This project is a great example of how communities are stepping up as we move toward a cleaner energy future,” said Mr. Farrell. “Small towns and communities across the province will benefit from this study.”

A smart grid is an electricity network that uses digital information to detect and react to changes in energy use. This can improve reliability and efficiency, and empower consumers to make more informed decisions by telling them how much energy they use at different times of the day.

“The town is excited to work with its partners to investigate how a smart grid could drive job creation and economic growth,” said Amherst Mayor David Kogon. “This project is one example of how Amherst continues to lead the way in clean energy technology and expertise.”
