Minister Attends Meeting in Whitehorse

Fisheries and Aquaculture Minister Keith Colwell concluded meetings today, June 28, in Whitehorse, Yukon, emphasizing Nova Scotia’s position as Canada’s leading seafood exporter.

The meetings were part of the Canadian Council of Fisheries and Aquaculture Ministers attended by provincial and territorial ministers and the federal Minister of Fisheries and Oceans.

“We know that the fishery is critical to the future of our province and key to creating jobs for young people and opportunities for the middle class,” said Mr. Colwell. “We’ve seen incredible growth in the export performance of our seafood sector and that translates into a bright future for our coastal and rural communities and the whole province.”

In 2016, Nova Scotia exported $1.8 billion worth of seafood to markets in the United States, Europe and Asia. For the second year in a row it was the leading seafood exporter in Canada. Mr. Colwell said Nova Scotia is proud of the contributions its fishing, aquaculture and seafood processing industries are making to export growth.

“Nova Scotia is well positioned to enjoy continued success in seafood exports and our government is committed to helping the industry strengthen its access to world markets,” said Mr. Colwell.
