Navigator Service Helps Business, Receives Recognition

Office of Regulatory Affairs and Service Effectiveness

A Nova Scotia program created to help businesses navigate regulations, reduce red tape, and save time and money has received national recognition today, Jan. 26.

The Business Navigation Service was launched in January 2017 and is the first and only one of its kind in Canada.

The Canadian Federation of Independent Business granted the service one of only three honourable mentions as part of its annual Golden Scissors Award. The award recognizes those who have shown leadership in cutting red tape, producing meaningful and positive results for small businesses.

“Government is helping create an environment where businesses can flourish, and the navigation service is an important part of that commitment,” said Premier Stephen McNeil, Minister responsible for Regulatory Affairs and Service Effectiveness. “Running a business isn’t easy. Our business navigators guide entrepreneurs through rules and regulations so they can get on with the work of opening and growing their businesses. I’m pleased to see this important service being recognized.”

Nova Scotia’s business navigators help startup and existing businesses:

  • receive timely information on rules and regulations specific to different businesses
  • understand how to comply with provincial regulations
  • secure the status of their business registration
  • get a status update on permit and licence applications
  • with completing applications and forms.

“I love having this service,” said Leslie Otter, owner of Bubble Tree Baby Boutique in Stellarton. “As a small business owner with no previous experience I appreciate having someone I can call when I have questions. I'm always worried that I'm not doing everything correctly and having this service puts my mind at ease.”

Since its launch, the program has served more than 1,100 mostly small businesses from communities across the province. The service saves each business an average of 10 hours and cumulatively has saved those businesses more than $1 million.

Business navigators can be reached Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., at 1-844-628-7347 (1-844-NAV-REGS) or by email at <BusNavigation@novascotia.ca.>
