Government Supporting Nova Scotia Music Industry

Government is helping to expand opportunities for Nova Scotia’s vibrant music industry through an investment in the East Coast Music Awards (ECMA) Festival and Conference.

Labour and Advanced Education Minister Labi Kousoulis, on behalf of Communities, Culture and Heritage Minister Leo Glavine, announced today, Jan. 29, $300,000 to support the hosting of this year’s 30th anniversary show in Halifax May 2-6.

“Hosting events of this magnitude helps to bring significant social and economic benefits to all Nova Scotians, including our vibrant music industry,” said Mr. Kousoulis. “This event also provides an opportunity to bring more international industry professionals to our province to experience what we can offer the world through our talented artists and venues. It is only fitting that the ECMA celebrates 30 years where it all began in 1988.”

The festival and conference features more than 50 showcases, 25 conference sessions, mentorship programs and the presentation of more than 40 music and industry awards.

“The ECMA is very appreciative of the support from the Department of Communities, Culture and Heritage, and this contribution goes a long way towards ensuring our 30th Anniversary event is one of the best in our organization's history," says East Coast Music Association executive director, Andy McLean. "Our aim is to increase the amount of renowned international delegates we bring in, which, in turn, results in more business opportunities for our incredible East Coast artists."

As part of Nova Scotia’s Culture Action Plan, government is actively supporting the music industry and other creative industries to expand their economic and cultural reach.
