Supporting Healthy and Vibrant Communities

Government is providing more opportunities for Nova Scotians to live an active lifestyle by ensuring communities have improved infrastructure for sport and recreation.

Fisheries and Aquaculture Minister Keith Colwell, on behalf of Communities, Culture and Heritage Minister Leo Glavine announced today, June 29, more than $1.8 million will be invested in 53 projects this year through the Recreational Facility Development Grant Program.

“A healthier Nova Scotia will create a stronger Nova Scotia, socially, economically, and emotionally by keeping our communities vibrant,” said Mr. Colwell.

“Through the Culture Action Plan, government is making it a priority to ensure all Nova Scotians have full opportunity for active living and that there is equal and inclusive access to sports and recreation opportunities.”

Mr. Colwell was in North Preston to announce a total of 15 projects for the Halifax region, including an acrylic surfaced basketball court for the community, that will be suitable for professional level play.

“This new facility is a celebration of the basketball and sport legacy of North Preston,” said Mr. Colwell.

The court will also include spectator seating, lighting and other amenities required to host special events in the community.

"As a community member of North Preston, I know the immediate impact this new project will have on the community as a whole but especially youth,” said Shaquille Smith.

“The new basketball court will serve as a great resource to the community and it is without a doubt that the community will have big plans to ensure that the court is used to its full potential.”

The Halifax Regional Municipality is also providing $100,000 towards the project.

“The basketball court will be a wonderful addition to North Preston that can be enjoyed by players of all levels,” said Mayor Mike Savage. “Shaq Smith is a wonderful role model for his commitment to his sport, his professionalism and for giving back to the community that gave him his start.”

Grants were also announced in Sydney, Bridgewater and Lantz:

• Municipal Affairs Minister Derek Mombourquette announced that Football Cape Breton will receive $33,500 to make improvements to the Open Hearth Park facilities
• Justice Minister Mark Furey announced that the Michelin Social and Athletic Club in Bridgewater will receive $43,000 for upgrades which will allow the club to maintain multi-use access for community groups
• Environment Minister Margaret Miller announced $19,000 for the Municipality of East Hants to redevelop a popular playground in Lantz.

The program helps community groups, municipalities and other not-for-profit organizations develop and improve facilities to increase public participation in sport and physical recreation.

Examples of projects that receive funding include recreation centres and halls, pools, arenas, an athletic field, parks and playgrounds and trails.
