Funding Supports Arts and Culture at Cape Breton University

The province will provide additional funding to support two important arts and culture centres at Cape Breton University (CBU).

Labour and Advanced Education Minister Labi Kousoulis announced $700,000 for the Beaton Institute and the Cape Breton University Art Gallery today, Sept. 26.

"The Beaton Institute and the art gallery are not just important to the students and staff of Cape Breton University, but also to the broader community across the island," says Mr. Kousoulis. "Both institutions are vital to the historical and cultural wellbeing of Nova Scotia."

The Beaton Institute is a repository for historically significant records of the university and Cape Breton. The Cape Breton University Art Gallery is the first and only full-time public art gallery on the island. Both institutions are used regularly by the public.

“Cape Breton University is proud to be the home to both the Beaton Institute and the CBU Art Gallery,” says David C. Dingwall, president, Cape Breton University. “At CBU we celebrate culture and these culturally significant centres provide tremendous value to the entire Nova Scotia region and further enrich and enhance our communities. We are thrilled to see them recognized in this way.”

This annual funding is in recognition of the importance the centres hold in the community. The investment supports the Culture Action Plan and the province’s vision of being a place known for its empowered, vibrant communities and a strong creative economy.

The province is currently in discussions with universities about the next multi-year funding agreement, called the Memorandum of Understanding, which is expected to be reached in Spring 2019.
