Team Nova Scotia Celebrates a Successful 2019 Canada Winter Games

Team Nova Scotia ended the 2019 Canada Winter Games in Red Deer, Alta., on a high note with two more medals, bringing Nova Scotia’s total medal count to 11 across eight different sports.

On the final day of competition, alpine skier Shane Sommer, Port Williams, captured a gold and the women’s curling team of Cally Moore, Upper Tantallon; Cassidy Currie, Lower Sackville; Cate Fitzgerald, Halifax; and Taylour Stevens, Chester, earned a bronze.

“All of Team Nova Scotia’s athletes should be proud of how they represented their province and the competitive spirit they showed at the 2019 games,” said Cathy Burton, Nova Scotia’s chef de mission. “The Canada Games provide our young athletes with an amazing opportunity to compete on a national level and come together as a single team and support one another.”

In week one of the games, Nova Scotia earned three medals:

  • a silver for boxer Alex Bulgaru, Halifax
  • a bronze for the artistic gymnastics team of Christopher Bearne, Halifax; Matthew Brown, Dartmout; Vincent d’Entremont, Hebbville, Lunenburg Co.; Landon Duquette, Middle Sackville; Andrew Gallant, Dartmouth; and Alex Watters, Williamswood, Halifax Regional Municipality
  • a bronze for boxer Matthew Ross, New Waterford

Week two saw Nova Scotia collect eight medals:

  • a gold for alpine skier Shane Sommer
  • a silver for para-alpine skier Brenda MacDonald, Granville Ferry
  • a silver for Special Olympic figure skater Scott Denyes, Beaver Bank, Halifax Regional Municipality
  • a silver for judoka Sierra Tanner, Halifax
  • a silver for Special Olympic figure skater Jessica Cranton, Annapolis Royal
  • a silver for trampoline duo Tia Wamboldt, Bridgewater, and Jordyn Henderson, Truro
  • a bronze for squash player Douglas Kosciukiewicz, Canaan, Kings Co.
  • a bronze for curlers Cally Moore, Cassidy Currie, Cate Fitzgerald and Taylour Stevens

Brenda MacDonald and Shane Sommer served as Nova Scotia’s co-flagbearers at the closing ceremony.

“Congratulations to Team Nova Scotia for a great effort at the games and all the hard work that went into getting there,” said Premier Stephen McNeil. “Nova Scotia is proud of your accomplishments and how well you represented our province at this national event.”

Team Nova Scotia also had a number of top five placements including:

  • fourth place for boxer Matthew Fraser, Antigonish; artistic gymnast Alex Watters; snowboarder Kate MacKinnon, Chester; trampolinists Kai Dwyer, Fall River; Carson Langille, Halifax; Tia Wamboldt, Bridgewater; and Jordyn Henderson, Truro, para-alpine skier Brenda MacDonald and alpine skier Cole Fraser, Bedford
  • fifth place for artistic gymnast Alex Watters, boxer Matt MacDonald, Sydney Mines; badminton player Miklos Kanyasi, Wolfville; judoka Emilie Townsend, Middleton; and archer Siyoon Kim, Halifax

“As our athletes head home, I’m struck by the successes Team Nova Scotia saw across many sports,” said Ms. Burton. “Along with medals and top finishes, there were many personal bests achieved and individual accomplishments that mean so much to our athletes.”

The 2019 Canada Winter Games took place Feb. 15 to March 3 at venues across Red Deer, Calgary and Kananaskis. Team Nova Scotia sent about 300 athletes, coaches and managers from across the province who competed in 21 sports.

The Canada Games are held every two years, alternating between summer and winter. They are key in developing Canada's young athletes, producing the next generation of national, international and Olympic champions. The next summer games will be held in Niagara, Ontario in 2021 and the next winter games will be held in Prince Edward Island in 2023.
