Lokeny Case Added to Rewards Program

Justice

Halifax Regional Police and the province are adding the homicide of Benjamin (Loka) Lokeny to the Rewards for Major Unsolved Crimes Program.

“The assault and subsequent death of Mr. Lokeny was tragic. Unsolved crimes such as this are also very difficult for the community,” said Justice Minister Mark Furey. “I hope that adding this case to the rewards program will encourage people to come forward with information that may help to solve this crime and provide his family, and the community, with closure.”

On July 20, 2017, police responded to a report of a male laying on the ground at the corner of Buddy Daye and Gottingen streets, Halifax. The investigation determined that Benjamin Lokeny,51, was the victim of a serious assault. He was transported to the hospital where he remained in a coma until his death on Aug. 28, 2017. An autopsy later confirmed the cause of death was a homicide.

The Rewards for Unsolved Crimes Program offers up to $150,000 to anyone who shares information leading to the arrest and conviction of the person or persons responsible for the crime. Anyone with information should call the program at 1-888-710-9090.

Individuals who come forward with information must provide their name and contact information. They may be called to testify in court. All calls will be recorded.

The rewards program launched in October 2006 as an additional tool to help police gather information on unsolved crimes. Since its inception, two full rewards of $150,000 and one partial reward of $100,000 have been paid out by the program.
