Decision Released on Alton Gas Appeal

Environment (April 2008 - Feb. 2021)

Environment Minister Margaret Miller released her decision on the appeal of the industrial approval for the Alton Gas project today, April 8.

After review of the evidence, Ms. Miller concluded that the consultations with Sipekne’katik First Nation were sufficient.

She also determined that the terms and conditions of the approval are sufficient to protect the environment.

For clarity, the approval has been amended to require Alton Gas to meet all applicable provincial, federal and municipal laws, including any future amendments to them.

In addition, the approval now requires the company to develop a communication plan for information sharing with Sipekne’katik First Nation on environmental issues that may require an amendment to the approval.

The amended industrial approval is available at https://novascotia.ca/nse/ia/pdfdocs/2008-061384-A03.pdf .
