Positions Available on Agencies, Boards and Commissions
Nova Scotians can serve their communities by applying for positions on the province’s more than 150 agencies, boards and commissions. Applications are now being accepted and all Nova Scotia residents are eligible to apply.
National Volunteer Week runs from April 7 to 13.
“This is a time to celebrate and recognize the important contributions made by Nova Scotians who volunteer, including the close to 800 members of our province’s agencies, boards and commissions,” said Leo Glavine, Minister of the Voluntary Sector. “We need people from all walks of life and with diverse backgrounds and abilities to serve in these roles.
“I encourage Nova Scotians to look at the many opportunities available and apply for one or more of them. You can get great experience and make a positive impact in your community and our province.”
People can apply to serve on a variety of agencies, boards and commissions. The opportunities range from colleges and boards of self-regulated health professions, such as the colleges of audiologists and speech-language pathologists, midwifery, and occupational therapists, to cultural organizations, such as Arts Nova Scotia, police advisory boards, and the Board of Registration of Embalmers and Funeral Directors.
“My advice to people who are thinking about applying is to go ahead and do it,” said Karen Pictou, member of the Nova Scotia Apprenticeship Agency Board. “It is very rewarding, can help advance your career and have a positive impact on your community.”
"Participating on a board of directors has been a great learning opportunity for me, in addition to being able to put my skills to use in helping the community," said Joline Comeau, member of the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia Board of Governors.

Applicants are assessed based on their skills and qualifications, taking into account the needs of the individual agency, board or commission. Applications will be considered for both current and upcoming vacancies. Typically, appointees are reimbursed for expenses, and in some cases, paid a modest amount for their services.
In order to increase the diversity of the agencies, boards and commissions, applications are encouraged from women, Mi’kmaq and other Indigenous people, African Nova Scotians and other racially visible people, persons with disabilities, Acadian Nova Scotians, immigrants and newcomers and persons from the 2SLGBTQ+ community.
