Total Allowable Catch Levels for Northern Shrimp to Remain
NOTE: The following is a statement from Minister of Fisheries and Aquaculture Keith Colwell.
The Province of Nova Scotia is pleased with the federal Department of Fisheries and Oceans decision to maintain the total allowable catch levels for Northern Shrimp at 2018 levels.
The Department of Fisheries and Oceans listened to the concerns raised by our fish harvesters and the industry. The fish harvesters asked for the department to manage the fishery on a two-year basis - a model that is used for many fish stocks throughout the country.
This decision is an important first step to rebuilding trust and ensuring the fishery is managed in a way that provides more certainty and sustainability.
We know that the gulf shrimp fishery is facing difficult environmental conditions. On a go forward basis, everyone needs to work together to ensure that this fishery is managed sustainably. This decision is an important step in that regard.
