Government has awarded the construction contract for relocating the QEII Health Sciences Centre’s chemotherapy preparation lab to a Bedford company.

Pomerleau Inc. was awarded the contract today, April 18.

As part of the QEII New Generation Project, the Halifax lab where chemotherapy treatment is prepared will move from the Victoria Building to the Dickson Building on the Victoria General site of the QEII Health Sciences Centre.

Pomerleau Inc. will renovate the Dickson building for the new lab which will be bigger, modern and have new technology and equipment to better meet the current and future demands.

The cost of the renovations is $4.26 million.

The QEII New Generation project includes a new cancer centre, outpatient centre, inpatient centre and research and innovation centre at the Halifax Infirmary site, expansion and renovations at the Dartmouth General Hospital, the construction of a new community outpatient centre in Bayers Lake, and one new and one renovated operating room at the Hants Community Hospital in Windsor that has been completed.

The redevelopment project will allow services to be moved out of the Centennial and Victoria buildings on the Victoria General site of the QEII Health Sciences Centre supporting their eventual closure.

The QEII Health Sciences Foundation is contributing an additional $2 million towards equipment for the lab.
