Construction of a new six-station dialysis unit at the Glace Bay Hospital is now underway.

“It’s exciting to see the construction start for the new dialysis unit at the Glace Bay Hospital,” said Business Minister Geoff MacLellan, on behalf of Health and Wellness Minister Randy Delorey. “Dialysis patients often make several trips for treatment each week and having it offered in our hospital means patients and their families will be able to get treatment closer to home.”

Dialysis patients now travel to the Cape Breton Regional Hospital in Sydney for treatment. The space will allow for 24 patients from Glace Bay to use the new unit daily.

The project will be partially funded by the estate of the late Thomas Peach of Glace Bay, who left $1.9 million with the intent of helping establish dialysis services in the community.

Construction is expected to be completed within a year.
