More Options to Support Responsible Gaming

Government wants to help casino patrons manage their play and access the support they need through a more flexible Voluntary Self Exclusion program.

New regulations that are now in effect will modernize the Voluntary Self Exclusion program to align with best practices in responsible gambling.

In addition to the current lifetime exclusion option, participants can choose shorter minimum options ranging from six months to three years. The new process for reinstatement includes a seven-day waiting period after the expiry of the term and completion of reinstatement requirements before being allowed to re-enter a casino. Information on responsible gambling resources will also be provided for participants.

“We heard that only having the lifetime ban option was a barrier for people thinking about enrolling in the program, as was the onerous process for reinstatement,” said Patricia Arab, Minister responsible for Part II of the Gaming Control Act. “The updated regulations are consistent with other provinces in Canada and best practices in responsible gambling.”

The new regulations will also make it less attractive to gamble while enrolled in the program. Participants in the casino in violation of their Voluntary Self Exclusion agreement will be required to forfeit any casino winnings.

Quick Facts:

  • about 1,909 people are currently enrolled in the program, managed by Casino Nova Scotia since 1995
