Nova Scotia Hosts Canadian Congress of Black Parliamentarians

Nova Scotia is hosting the Canadian Congress of Black Parliamentarians 2020 summit from Feb. 28 to 29 in Halifax. The annual meeting will focus on education, youth engagement and access to justice.

The Canadian Congress of Black Parliamentarians is an independent, non-partisan group of legislators of African descent. The summit is an opportunity to work collaboratively to provide workable solutions for issues and concerns related to African Canadians.

“I am deeply honoured to be directing and facilitating the discussions as the host jurisdiction for the summit,” said African Nova Scotian Affairs Minister Tony Ince. “I look forward to collectively discovering new ideas to address the systemic racism, discrimination and injustices still facing African Canadians. I am also proud to showcase Nova Scotia’s most recent initiatives to my fellow leaders.”

There are representatives from seven jurisdictions attending the Canadian Congress of Black Parliamentarians including the Government of Canada, Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island, Quebec, Ontario, Manitoba and Alberta.

Quick Facts:

  • the Canadian Congress of Black Parliamentarians was first established in 2015
  • the black population accounts for 3.5 per cent of Canada’s total population and 15.6 per cent of the population that is defined as a visible minority
  • African Nova Scotians are the largest racialized group in the province making up 37.3 per cent of Nova Scotia’s racialized population
  • Ontario has the largest black population in Canada and is home to more than 52.4 percent of the total black population in Canada
