Crews Respond to Several Wildfires

Lands and Forestry (July 2018 - Aug. 2021)

Dry conditions across the province are fueling several wildfires and the province’s crews and partner organizations are responding.

“We have teams of expert wildfire fighters and they are all being deployed to where they are needed, working alongside local fire departments and other response agencies,” said Iain Rankin, Minister of Lands and Forestry. “It’s extremely important for the public to keep updated on the latest information, stay away from these areas and reduce the risk of further fires by adhering to provincial and municipal fire restrictions.”

There are three significant wildfires underway now.

On Monday, May 25, ground and air crews and volunteer fire departments responded to a wildfire near Frankville, Antigonish Co. An incident command centre has now been established with 17 provincial wildfire crew, a helicopter and 31 volunteer firefighters on scene today, May 26. The wildfire is estimated to be about 200 hectares in size and is about 40 per cent contained. It is considered to be out of control.

Wildfire crews on the ground and in the air continue working today with multiple volunteer fire departments in responding to a fire near Alton Road in the Springfield area of Kings County. This wildfire is still estimated to be about 120 hectares and is currently considered out of control.

In the southern end of the province near Argyle, Yarmouth Co., Department of Lands and Forestry personnel are back on the scene of a wildfire estimated to be about 30 to 50 hectares, considered under control.

Currently no fires are near residential areas and no structures have been lost.

  • the wildfire in the West Porters Lake area of Halifax Regional Municipality that started over the weekend is under control and still being patrolled for hot spots after facing additional flare-ups on Monday, May 25
  • the wildfire that crews responded to on Monday, May 25, in Grand Mira South in Cape Breton is under control and being patrolled for hot spots
