Public Events to Celebrate Nova Scotia Heritage and Artistic Excellence
Nova Scotians are invited to attend the 2020 Fall Evenings at Government House series hosted by Lt.-Gov. Arthur J. LeBlanc.
As many of the winter series presentations were cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the fall series will reoffer these events.
"Patsy and I are delighted to welcome people to the seventh series of Evenings at Government House that we have hosted since my appointment as lieutenant governor," said Lt.-Gov. LeBlanc. "We are pleased that many of the performers and speakers who could not be present in the winter will be featured.”
The series includes a presentation on Alzheimer’s disease from a leading researcher, a cello and harp concert and presentations to mark the 75th anniversary of the end of the Second World War.
All events take place at Government House, 1451 Barrington St., Halifax. Government House will adhere to the public health order and directives related to COVID-19. Guests will be required to wear masks while inside Government House.
Event schedule:
- a presentation on the important advances in dementia and Alzheimer’s disease by the renowned researcher Dr. Sultan Darvesh, director of the Maritime Brain Tissue Bank, Tuesday, Sep. 22, from 7 to 8 p.m.
- a concert featuring cellist India Gailey and harpist Ellen Gibling, both former Nova Scotia Talent Trust scholarship recipients, Tuesday, Oct. 6, from 7 to 8 p.m.
- to mark the 75th Anniversary of the Battle of the Atlantic, Canada’s pre-eminent naval historian, Marc Milner, will discuss the longest continuous naval and air campaign during the Second World War, in which the Royal Canadian Navy and Royal Canadian Airforce played a pivotal role, Tuesday, Oct. 20, from 7 to 8 p.m.
- to mark the 75th Anniversary of the end of the Second World War, renowned author Stephen Kimber will tell the story of how Halifax’s experiences during that conflict led to the shocking VE Day Riots, Tuesday, Nov. 3, from 7 to 8 p.m.
- a presentation on the Victoria General School of Nursing Graduates who bravely served in the wars and conflicts of the 20th Century, Tuesday, Nov. 17, from 7 to 8 p.m.
- to mark the 75th Anniversary of the liberation of the Netherlands, George Zwaagstra will discuss his experience as a 10-year-old messenger boy for the Dutch resistance in the Nazi-occupied Netherlands, Tuesday, Dec. 1, from 7 to 8 p.m.
The events are free and, as seating is limited to 25, people must register online at lt.gov.ns.ca or by calling 902-424-7001.
Registration will open two weeks before each presentation and close on the Thursday preceding the performance. Up to 25 names will be randomly drawn and those selected will be notified by the Friday preceding the performance. Guests may reserve a maximum of two seats per registration. Names drawn with an accompanying guest will be allocated two seats.
