Make a Difference by Joining an Agency, Board or Commission

Executive Council Office

Nova Scotians who want to grow their skills, make a difference in their communities and have a say in issues that matter to them can now apply to join provincial agencies, boards and commissions.

Applications are being accepted for these groups, which provide advice and services in a variety of areas, including health care, education, environment, culture and professional regulation.

“Agencies, boards and commissions offer a chance to give back to the community while growing skills and experience,” said Suzanne Lohnes-Croft, Minister of the Voluntary Sector. “We encourage applicants from various cultures and backgrounds to apply. Having a variety of perspectives and ideas will ultimately mean our organizations will be more effective and representative of the communities they serve.”

The application deadline for some opportunities is Nov. 23. Applications for many other positions are accepted year-round.

In order to increase the diversity of agencies, boards and commissions, applications are encouraged from youth, women, Mi’kmaq and other Indigenous people, African Nova Scotians and other racially visible people, persons with disabilities, Acadian Nova Scotians, immigrants and newcomers, and persons from the 2SLGBTQ+ community.

“Sitting on the Board of Governors has been a great experience in developing strategic thinking, while positively contributing to an issue I care about – immigration and opportunities for advancing education in my community. I consider my board experience to be one of the most meaningful experiences I've had. The diversity and the vast skill set of the board of directors allows for networking outside of one's industry, which is a great way to learn about various sectors, and can open the door to new opportunities for generating ideas and collaboration.”
