Legislation Recognizes Volunteer Canadian Coast Guard Auxiliary

Finance and Treasury Board

Nova Scotian members of the Canadian Coast Guard Auxiliary will qualify for an exemption of their vehicle registration fee as of today, Feb. 1.

Government has proclaimed legislation that recognizes volunteers for their support for marine search and rescue operations. The exemption includes cars and light trucks.

“Nova Scotians have seen these search and rescue volunteers working in difficult circumstances with selfless dedication,” said Finance and Treasury Board Minister Karen Casey. “I’m proud that Nova Scotia is the first to offer this recognition.”

The auxiliary provides valuable support for the commercial fishery year round and for pleasure craft during the summer. These members use their own vessels to help cover extensive coastline.

Quick Facts:

  • there are more than 400 active auxiliary members in Nova Scotia who may be eligible for the exemption
  • members live in communities including Yarmouth, Liverpool, Advocate Harbour, Parrsboro, Pugwash, Sheet Harbour, Ingonish and Glace Bay
  • maximum vehicle registration fee is $167 per year
