Following an April announcement of a new pre-primary to Grade 8 school on Halifax’s peninsula, government confirmed today, June 24, that students of École Mer et Monde will continue to learn at their current school without disruption until the new school is complete.

The province has purchased École Mer et Monde’s current site in south-end Halifax. Conseil scolaire acadien provincial (CSAP) has been leasing the property; the current lease expires in August 2021 with no option to renew.

“Government was pleased to announce a new school for Acadian and francophone students in Halifax and I’m happy this arrangement will allow CSAP to continue to use this facility without disruption until the new school is open,” said Derek Mombourquette, Minister of Education and Early Childhood Development. “We continue to support quality French-first language education for our province’s growing and vibrant Acadian and francophone community.”

The site, which is the former location of the Halifax Grammar School at 5750 Atlantic Street, has been purchased from the Fountain family for $7.5 million.

Quick Facts:

  • about 300 students attend École Mer et Monde
  • in April, government announced plans to build a new CSAP school on the site of the former RCMP headquarters at the corner of Oxford Street and Bayers Road
