Minister’s Statement on Mi’kmaw Summer Games

L'nu Affairs

NOTE: The following is a statement from Karla MacFarlane, Minister of L’nu Affairs.

On Sunday, community members and participants will gather in Potlotek, Richmond County, for the opening ceremonies of the Mi’kmaw Summer Games.

It will be an exciting time for community members and athletes, who will see each other in person and compete to win medals for the first time since 2019.

While the Summer Games are about celebrating the Mi’kmaw participants who will be competing in a variety of activities over the next week, the event also highlights Mi’kmaw culture and heritage.

We are fortunate to have 13 strong Mi’kmaw communities around our province, each playing an important role in the cultural, economic and social well-being of Nova Scotia.

In just one year, our province will be abuzz with the 2023 North American Indigenous Games, the largest multi-sport event ever hosted in Atlantic Canada.

Nova Scotians cannot wait to welcome Indigenous athletes and their families to our province, and we look forward to sharing and celebrating culture, language and community.

As Minister of L’nu Affairs, I look forward to attending some of the festivities happening in Potlotek and area this July 15-24. Many thanks to the organizers and volunteers for their hard work and important contributions to these Summer Games.

I wish the athletes, coaches, performers and others involved in the Summer Games a fun and successful week ahead. Enjoy this opportunity to gather and celebrate Mi’kmaw culture and heritage in Nova Scotia.

Wela’lioq (WELL-AH-LEE-OOG). Thank you.
