Support for Africville Museum Strategic Plan

African Nova Scotian Affairs

The Province is supporting the Africville Heritage Trust to develop a strategic plan and ensure a sustainable future.

A $150,000 investment will allow the organization to refresh programming and develop strategic and operational plans to help ensure the long-term success of the Africville Museum, which it operates.

“One way we address Nova Scotia’s history of injustice is by building capacity for African Nova Scotian communities and organizations to have a brighter future,” said Pat Dunn, Minister of African Nova Scotian Affairs. “Africville is such an important cultural landmark, and we want to make sure it will continue to be shared with Nova Scotians and visitors from around the world.”

The Africville Heritage Trust was established in 2010 after a settlement and apology from Halifax Regional Municipality for the destruction of the historic African Nova Scotian community in the 1960s. It is working to develop a new strategic plan by September.

Quotes:

“This contribution is an investment in the future development, growth and sustainability of the Africville Museum. As the history of Africville travels the world, the demands on this little museum continue to grow. We are excited about the future.”

– Juanita Peters, Executive Director, Africville Heritage Trust

“Africville is important to our history and our future. It’s a key site not only for Nova Scotians, but for visitors from across Canada, the United States and beyond, who are drawn to explore the culture and history of the African diaspora. We’ll continue to work with the Africville Heritage Trust and other organizations as we develop an African Nova Scotian tourism strategy to share our culture and attract visitors from around the world.”

– Dwayne Provo, Associate Deputy Minister, African Nova Scotian Affairs
